1. What makes Nalini Singh tick?
Chocolate, books and of course, writing. :)
2. What drew you to writing?
It simply fits. I’ve always been a voracious reader, plus I was always the kid in school who loved English (yes, I admit my geekdom with pride). So writing my own stories was a natural progression – just something I really, desperately wanted to do.
3. What can you tell us about your release, HOSTAGE TO PLEASURE, the 5th of the Psy-Changeling series?
This is the story of Dorian, one of the DarkRiver sentinels. Dorian is a changeling, but he’s latent, unable to shift into the leopard form that is his other half. Dorian’s also an incredibly angry hero, having been scarred by the brutal murder of his sister at the hands of a Psy sociopath.
The Psy as a race, are very cold, having conditioned out their emotions. So falling for a Psy is the last thing Dorian would ever want. But life has a way of surprising us, and Dorian’s heroine is not only Psy, she’s part of the very structure that allowed his sister’s killer to roam free.
As you might guess from the things I’ve mentioned, the love story in Hostage to Pleasure is deeply emotionally intense. There are also a lot of developments happening in terms of the overarching backstory.
4. What can you share with us about the characters in this story? What do you hope readers like about them?
I’ve said a little bit about Dorian above, so here I’ll talk about Ashaya, the heroine. She’s a very strong woman, and someone who’s learned to keep secrets early and hold them tight, because in her case, telling someone the truths she’s hiding might lead to death, or to a devastating psychic brainwipe that would leave her little more than a vegetable. It’s going to be hard for her to trust anyone.
I hope readers are compelled by the strength shown by both Dorian and Ashaya—they’re both very unique, but they both also have a core of pure steel. And when they come together…sparks!
5. What did you like best about HOSTAGE TO PLEASURE? What is your favourite aspect of the world you created?
That’s a difficult question to answer—now that I’m into the 5th book of the series (and having recently handed in the 6th), I have so much to choose from. I feel very lucky to have had the scope to develop my world over this many books.
That, in itself, is something I really, really enjoy – the fact that I get to develop not only my world, seeing different facets of it each time, but that I get to continue to develop my characters. People don’t disappear after their book—they’re an integral part of the series, and I can’t tell you how much I love that.
6. What kind of reading experience are you hoping to create for your readers? What do you want them to come away from your books saying, thinking and feeling?
Reading is an intensely personal experience, so for each reader the book will engender different emotions. I can only hope that when they close the final page, they’ll give a great big sigh of satisfaction—I really want to move my readers each time, and leave them feeling that their time has been well-spent.
7. If you could write in another genre that you haven’t yet, which would it be? Why?
I love romance, so whatever I write, I think it’ll always have romance. In terms of sub-genres of romance, I think it would be quite fun to write a straight, single title contemporary. But knowing me, a shapeshifter or three might creep in ;)
8. How can readers contact you?
You can email me through my website (www.nalinisingh.com), or chat to me on my blog (www.nalinisingh.blogspot.com), or livejournal (www.nalini-singh.livejournal.com). I’m also on Myspace and Facebook and I’m an email junkie, so if anyone’s got questions, feel free to shoot them to me. (If you’ve got questions about the Psy/Changeling series, you might also want to check out the FAQ page on my website.)
9. Let us know how the info on your book so we can run out and grab it!
Hostage to Pleasure
Release date: September 2nd
10. What future project(s) are you working on–what do readers have to look forward to?
I have a fun Psy/Changeling novella releasing in October as part of The Magical Christmas Cat anthology (there’s an excerpt up on my website), and then next year, I have a new series debuting. The first book is Angels’ Blood and it’s about a vampire hunter who bags, tags and transports escapee vampires to their masters…the angels. It’s dark, dangerous and sexy. Look out for it in March 2009. (There’ll be an excerpt in back of Hostage to Pleasure to whet your appetites.)
Thanks for the interview, Chey!
